TL;DR - Health extends your life and gives you more life in your life.

Overview

A healthy man wants a thousand things. A sick man wants one. - Confucius (?)

Health is one of the most important things in life. Some say "Health is Wealth". Without it, you're severely limited in what you can do - whether in ability, enjoyment, or time to spend.

Big factors in your health:

  • Sleep - This is when your body heals. You can't think / be at 100% without good sleep - physically or mentally. Any time you sacrifice sleep, you sacrifice capability in your waking hours, often at greater costs than the time you may have saved.
  • Food - You are what you eat. Not really but bodies are made in the kitchen and eating poorly is a guaranteed way to have long-term health problems.
  • Exercise - The cheapest way to extend and improve your life. Solves all sorts of health problems, helps people regulate their emotions, and often brings happiness / confidence in good measure.

These directly impact the resources you have to spend in your life:

  • Mood
  • Energy
  • Focus

So in many ways, expending resources on improving and maintaining your health brings positive returns on those resources.A

Sleep

Sleep is how your body heals and recharges. You should get 7-9 hours a night.

While stats vary, it's typical to expect your physical and intellectual performance to drop by 10-20% after a bad night of sleep. What's often not tracked is loss of energy, mood, and focus over the whole day which I'd guesstimate is closer to 30-40%.

In general it is never worth it to lose out on sleep. It's a net negative ROI no matter how you swing it as the whole next day will get a % hit to its effectiveness, nullifying any gains you might've gotten from extra hours awake.

It's generally okay to mess up a night here and there but my rule of thumb is only once in a 2 week period, ideally 4.

I started taking my sleep seriously in 2023 and now it's smth I go to great lengths to defend.
