Modern clouds make it easy to deploy webapps to the world. But if you're not careful they can also cost you far more than you'd expect.
As an example, this developer ran up a $100k cloud bill due to runaway cloud costs - largely due to egress fees.
In this post we'll compare the egress costs from some of the most popular cloud services so you can make an informed decision about where to host your own apps.
Cloud Egress Costs
For our comparison we'll be looking at popular serverless container services and comparing their egress bandwidth costs:
- Azure - Container Apps
- Digital Ocean - App Platform (referral)
- Google Cloud - Cloud Run
- Railway (referral)
We'll be pulling data from CloudCompare - a site that aggregates serverless container cloud offerings to make them easier to compare.
For our purposes, we're going to be comparing how much each service would cost if you used 100 GB of egress. This is a bit easier to understand than tenths of a cent and should give you a reasonable estimate of what an actual app getting decent traffic would cost for egress.
Price per 100GB of egress:
- Azure: $8.70
- Digital Ocean: $1.00
- Google Cloud: $8.50
- Railway: $10.00

Cloud egress costs are only one of many factors you should consider when choosing a cloud host. But they shouldn't be ignored - this is often what sinks side projects at scale.
