My wife and I got an Eight Sleep a couple years ago and we love it. I'm a warm sleeper and we live in a small NYC apartment without central air so the Eight Sleep has helped a lot with regulating my temperature. Plus it lets me set a different temperature than my wife so she can have it warm and I can have it cold which is great.

The problems with my sleep started a couple months ago, around when I had my baby. At that time I was waking up multiple times through the night anyway due to the baby so I wasn't getting great sleep.

But I noticed that I kept waking up 1-2 times throughout the night even when the baby did not wake up. I thought that was weird but maybe it was a circadian rhythm thing. Except it persisted for weeks and weeks.

A couple weeks ago I went on a trip to a friend's wedding and noticed that I slept through the whole night despite the bed / temperature not being the most comfortable. This got me thinking about what the difference was between that environment and the environment at home - what is changing a few times a night that could be waking me up?

Then I remembered Eight Sleep has an autopilot feature that tries to adjust temps multiple times throughout the night. So I decided to change it and see what happened.

Ever since, I've slept through the entire night! So it seems Eight Sleep was waking me up when it was trying to help me sleep.

I've now taken off any settings that would change the temperature throughout the night:

  • No ambient change
  • No autopilot change
  • Temperature is static throughout the night

This does limit the utility I get out of Eight Sleep but it's also letting me get a full night's sleep which is a fine tradeoff for me.
