How to Fix Lenovo P1 Gen 7 - Fans Running While Sleeping And Plugged In

The Lenovo P1 Gen 7 runs hot - not as hot as some workstations but hot enough that its fans need to run frequently. This is okay when the laptop is on but sometimes they'll run even when the laptop is sleeping.
In this post we'll discuss why this happens and how to fix it.
The Problem
The P1 Gen 7 tends to get hot when it's plugged in. When it's sleeping this seems to continue, triggering the fans to turn on to cool it off.
Obviously this is both concerning and annoying - the laptop is being loud when it should be doing nothing and it kinda seems like a fire hazard if it's left like that for an extended period of time.
The Fix
To Fix this I changed the Power Mode from Best Performance while Plugged In to Balanced. This seems to tell the P1 to chill out and ends up being less hot - both when on and while sleeping.
Note that this does mean the laptop is not reaching its full performance but personally I think the laptop is powerful enough and the lower fan rates are well worth it.
To change the power mode:
- Go to System - Battery and Power
- Under Power Mode - change Plugged In to Balanced
This lowered the fan usage while on and I haven't observed the fans turning on at all while the laptop is sleeping - though it does still get a little warm.
Next
This seems to have solved the symptom of the fans turning on while the laptop is sleeping but doesn't solve the root cause - why is this laptop so hot when it's plugged in and sleeping? Theoretically it's not doing much, right?
I don't have a fix for that yet so lmk if you do so I can implement it.
