I don't usually write about Google Workspace / business accounts but I spent the past few days trying to figure out how to subscribe to YouTube Premium with my Google Workspace account which I think is dumb so figured others might find themselves in the same situation.

In this post we'll discuss the problem with signing up for YouTube Premium with a Google Workspace account and how I was able to do so.

The Problem with Google Workspace and YouTube Premium

On a lot of forums you'll see questions about not being able to sign up for YouTube Premium. Some people were able to but others claim that no Google Workspace account can have Premium.

I'm here to tell you that you can (I did it) but it takes a little bit of doing.

The issue I was facing is everytime I tried to sign up for one of the premium plan options - it would throw an error. Naturally I thought this was a bug or due to my account type but I kept looking and eventually stumbled upon some legalese that said:

"Except for Google Workspace Individual edition accounts, Google Workspace accounts are not eligible for trials unless they are signing up for Student subscriptions".

Looking back at the subscriptions that were throwing errors - they all had a 1 month free trial (aka not allowed).

So the way I solved this was to sign up for one of the options that did NOT have a free trial.

Unfortunately this meant the one year subscription which was more than I wanted to pay all at once but only has a discount (not a trial) and passed.

Upon purchasing - I can now enjoy YouTube Premium's no ad experience with my workspace account!

This is a funny little bug that really is a net negative all around. Google is kind of just losing money cause people want to pay for this service but due to the trial restriction it's not letting them.

But it's also one of those bugs that's so niche that big tech often won't notice / get around to fixing it. (Google if you're reading this pls go fix it)
