Ham
I've been thinking a lot about my visions for myself and my life.
- Where do I want to be at the end of my life?
- Where would I have to be in the next 3-5 years to make that happen?
My hope is this gives me something I'm excited to work towards - something I feel I've been missing the past few months.
Separately I think I've been struggling with "Journey before Destination". Focusing a bit too much on where I want to go and not enough on actually enjoying the journey.
Observe
July has flown by. Summers in New York are wonderful but seem all too short. I'm trying to be present and enjoy it while it lasts.
- Lots of visitors
- Sleep No More
- Brooklyn Mirage for the first time this year
- Rooftop dinner parties
- Celebrated engagement and Megna's 30th (again)
Create
I've been working for awhile on HangOut as part of my quest to iterate faster. But also have gotten distracted learning functional programming and F#.
It's one of those things that seems like a pure distraction but I've learned a lot and been enjoying it so hard to say no. I've been considering switching CloudSeed to use F# instead of C# for its backend.
It's a risky choice as F# has a much smaller community than C# (about 1/20th) which means a smaller market. That said this community seems a lot more engaged and underserved so maybe "riches are in the niches" applies here. We'll see.
One thing I can say for sure is that functional programming feels like the paradigm I've been working towards with my coding style / views of "quality" but didn't have the formal terminology to explain. Learning about the best practices / techniques from this community has certainly lent a fresh, new perspective on my craft.
I'm excited to Create again =)
Reflect
My high rate of spending has continued this month with several large purchases aimed at resolving long-standing wants like better pants, less time playing video games, and better journaling systems. I'm not sad I made these purchases but it's definitely past time I focused in on increasing my savings rate - particularly in a down market.
Health wise I've been allowing myself to get sucked deep into Creations (mind) and been slacking on my exercise (body). I've really been able to supercharge my rate of learning with this tradeoff but it's been impacting my happiness so time to rebalance.
Share
I've done some restructuring of my monthly budgets to allocate most of my HamForGood funds into the HamForGood Fund. While this does mean less money to orgs in the near term, it feels more aligned with my goals of lifetime, sustained impact.
I'm still trying to find my rhythm with Shares. Some months go well with sustainable, quality production and some go terrible with no production at all. I've made some improvements to my sharing systems that I hope will make them cost less with more consistent quality. We'll see.
